Polyester-clad host Fred Kahl calls out Now That’s Entertainment to encourage and congratulate contestants for taking off their clothes, getting into a giant balloon or naming that smell. Bootylicious co-host Julie Atlas Muz calls the shots as contestants vie for cash, prizes, or the chance to be spanked. The fun and humiliation climax when the "winning" contestant chooses one of two curtains: "This" or "That", out of which emerges either a classic burlesque hottie or an act that stinks so bad it’s brilliant. A variety of hot and hilarious acts fill the bill: the curvaceous This or That Girls, the well endowed Wonderful Woman, a borsht belt Ukulele player and a mad Russian sorceress. Contestants act out their fantasies without actually having to run away from home to join the burlesque show. Home viewers and the live studio audience cheer on contestants as they meet the show's challenges answering trivia questions, stuffing marshmallows in their mouth, and guessing the weight of Wonderful Woman's rack. Friday, January 14, 2005Club puts new bloom on old va-va-va-voomBy Kelly Carter, USA TODAY 4/10/2003 LOS ANGELES — Celebrities are flocking to nightclub Forty Deuce for a risque burlesque show that has become the talk of the town. Big stars such as Brad Pitt, Hugh Grant, Sandra Bullock, Lara Flynn Boyle, George Clooney, Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger and Colin Farrell have hit the club since it opened last summer. (Related item:Risque burlesque takes off everywhere) Mulholland Drive co-star Laura Elena Harring is a fan.
"Demi Moore has all of her girlfriends there," Harring says. " Nicole Kidman does little parties there. I've done a little party there. I highly recommend it. It's so much fun." Twice a night, two dancers perform to a live three-piece combo that plays old-school stripper music. Using the bar as their stage, the women strut their stuff, admirably avoiding martini glasses in their fishnet stockings and silver high heels while removing gloves and fedoras and teasing the crowd with their boas. Eventually they strip down to flesh-colored bras with sequins and bikini underpants. It's a striptease that's mostly tease. "Forty Deuce gets me so excited," Harring says. "There's so much energy. When I see those girls dancing, my cells are jumping so high that I can't sit down. It got to a point one night that I had to leave and go dance salsa. I had to dance or I was going to die." Former NFL star Warren Moon is a regular and enjoys taking out-of-town guests. He also loves the energy and has seen how people react when the show ends and the music begins.
"I've seen girls get up on stage and go crazy," he says. "It's a different vibe from what you get at every other bar and club." That was always nightclub owner Ivan Kane's goal. "L.A. nightlife for a long time was kind of a yawn," says Kane, who also owns Deep, another Hollywood hot spot. "It was defined by posturing, posing, pretense, table-hopping and seeing and being seen. It needed something more." Several years ago he opened Kane, which had a funky, soul vibe. Last summer he changed Kane to Forty Deuce, coming up with the name from his days as a kid in New York when he would skip school and head to Times Square to check out burlesque shows. If you're trying to get into Forty Deuce, it helps to know Kane, a former jazz dancer on and off Broadway. Capacity is a scant 65. There's no VIP section. The dark room is filled with industry types. Women make up 65% of the crowd. "I wanted it to be sexy and sensual but at the same time fun and accessible to women and men," Kane says. "Basically, I want everybody to leave the club, go home and just make love."

Thursday, January 06, 2005DJ Meat Mistress & DJ Jack FettermanNYC DJ Meat MistressCurrently resident DJ for NYC’s weekly burlesque sensation, Starshine, DJ Meat Mistress (aka Anita Serwacki) got her start guest-spinning at In Hi-Fi at Bar d'O, eventually partnering with In Hi-Fi co-founder Jack Fetterman for the follow-up party, Soundtracks for Drinking, and as the DJ team for the launch of Bombshell! Burlesque. Anita was an editorial contributor and guest DJ on Luxuriamusic.com and has exposed her groovy music of yesteryear to audiences throughout NYC and Los Angeles, and in a bar in Kansas City, the name of which she can no longer recall. Other notable details about Anita: she was music supervisor for the Robert Evans documentary "The Kid Stays In the Picture," she has been photographed with Charles Nelson Reilly, she once learned to play “Whole Lotta Love” on the clarinet, Bob Odenkirk recently bought her a snow globe in Utah. DJ Jack Fetterman NYC Jack Fetterman created In Hi-Fi (www.inhi-fi.com) at Bar d'O with Scott Springer in 1996, the quintessential lounge party in New York City and hang-out for the neo-easy listening cognoscenti. Other gigs include P.S. 2 Warm Up DJs, Don Hill's, The Kahiki Tiki Restaurant, The Fez, Luxuriamusic.com, Bombshell! Burlesque, "The Party" at Rififi, and Starshine Burlesque. Jack is currently producing his own music and has tracks appearing on the upcoming Don Tiki and Juan Garcia Esquivel remix albums as well as "Two Zombies Later" and "Interplanetary Materials" on the Comfortstand label (www.comfortstand.com). Her rock band, The Urban Pioneers, just released their third CD and are a featured act at East Coast blues festivals, where they drive unsuspecting audiences wild with delight. In addition to opening for Dave Mason, Clarence "Gate Mouth" Brown, Rick Danko and the Radiators, they headline regularly at dozens of New York area venues. Lex recently collaborated with slide guitar legend Kerry Kearney in a series of sold-out shows where they presented and invented an untraditional take on traditional blues, entitled "The Lex Grey/Kerry Kearney Experiment." Lex's life does not end with rock and roll . . . . She is an interpreter extraordinaire of jazz and American standards, "the true roots of rock," sez Lex. Her presence also extends to the burlesque stage in the "Va Va Voom Room," where she awes the audience with her four-octave voice and her three dollar "schtick." Inspired by the burlesque revival, she wrote the show a theme song appropriately entitled "Va Va Voom." When Lex landed in Amsterdam to rehearse for her leading role in the European revival of the musical "Hair," she promptly befriended the area's best musicians and launched a tour of Italy, Germany and Holland with a totally original and impromptu R&B band. She also had the honor of being a guest vocalist for "Illuminati," a 30-piece orchestra covering classic rock and songs of the Grateful Dead.2004
