Thursday, March 31, 2005Frenchie FontaineFrenchie Fontaine Los Angeles Kari French (aka Carlotta Blue of the Velvet Hammer) is a performer/artist and actor who loves dabbling in recreating authentic burlesque. Her interest has shifted from an extensive career as a performance artist using dance & theatre to visually combine feminist philosophy, social comment and humor. She is also known as the Pussy Print-cess, making souvenir art by tastefully using her crotch as a paint brush. These prints have made their way into galleries, been used as wallpaper in art installations and performed live to raise money for many good causes. When she isn't performing or making art out of Barbie dolls, she's hanging out sipping absinthe in her "Modesty Blaise-esque" toy-infested house. She go go dances from room to room dreaming up schemes for her career as an international spy girl. Rumor has it she is to go out on her first intergalactal mission in the very near future. Her house can be seen in "PAD A Guide to Ultra-Living", and "Kitch Deluxe" due out Fall '03.

Lukki, the great burlesque legend of stage and screen, began her illustrious career at Texas Guinan's 300 Club at the tender age of 18. She became a regular fixture in speakeasies and clubs around the globe including, in New York City, Club Intime, Club Argonaut, and the Century Club, and, in Chicago, the Paramount Club, the Copacabana (with the Wally Wanger Girls), and at Club De Lisa (with Sun Ra). Lukki also appeared on Broadway in Padlcoks of 1927 and toured throughout the United States as a principal fan dancer in Too Hot For Paris (which, incidentally, turned out to be apropos as the show was banned in France!) Lukki performed at the Chicago World's Fair as Sally Rand's backup dancer and also as a hoochie koochie dancer in the Tunisian Village. Gracing the silver screen with her angelic presence, Lukki appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters including "I Am Suzanne" and "Boys and Girls Together". Lukki also penned a number of important exposes and articles about her glamorous career, the collection of which - along with new commentary and never-before-seen photographs -is currently in press with a major New York publisher and is entitled "Lukki! The Great Fire of Chicago: A Biography." She currently teaches burlesque workshops at the Savoy Home for Assisted Living in Brooklyn, New York.

The Goddess Perlman is a musical theatre drama fag that got lost in the downtown performance art scene and ended up working Burlesque. Recent shows include: "Nice Jewish Girl Gone Bad" @ Joe's Pub and "The Mensch" which debuts May 31st @ Makor. She's also appeared with The Bindlestiffs, Ladyfest and at several Gay Expos in NYC. She has also been featured on MTV's cutting room floor, Lifetime, Oxygen, NY-1 and a TV show in Canada that no one has ever heard of. In addition, she's taken her show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, won 2nd place at the Kudzu Film Festival in Athens, GA, Best Pop Video at Arlene's Grocery's Picture Show, and then wowed the crowd at the Evolve Festival in Nova Scotia. This summer the Goddess will present the first annual Goddess Fest in the Catskills featuring the fine talents of Murray Hill, Tammy Faye Starlite and the Wau Wau Sisters. DJ Brother Cleve is known as one of the pioneers of the international lounge scene. As keyboardist for SubPop/Bungalow recording artists Combustible Edison, Cleve got to meet and work with many of the greats of the old guard, including Juan Garcia Esquivel, Piero Umiliani ("Mah- Na Mah-Na"), and Peter Thomas. A life long record collector, he began a series of parties with a lounge theme in the mid-90's, mixing classic recordings of the 50's-70's into a flow with contemporary dance music based in a similar vein. As a DJ, he has worked alongside many of his contemporaries (Pizzacato Five, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Nicola Conte, Bebel Gilberto, Ursula 1000, Gentle People, Karminsky Experience among them) around the globe (New York, London, Moscow, Rome, Mexico City, San Francisco); he's also scored music for clients such as HBO/Cinemax, Discovery Channel, Universal Studios, Cartoon Network, and Hormel Foods. In 1997, she traveled to Sarajevo, to perform her show-stopping fan dance to a shell shocked public shortly after the peace accord was signed and the Serbian siege had ended. Since that time, she has declared herself the first fan dancer to perform in post-war Bosnia. In her native Manhattan, Miss Martini has delighted audiences with her Fan Dance, Balloon Striptease, Dance of the Several Veils, Shadow Strip and other classic burlesque revivals in such venues as The Slipper Room, Bombshell!,The Supper Club, and Joe's Pub. She has been featured in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall to infamous gay leather bars The Lure and the Eagle. She is a featured performer at The VaVaVoom Room in its successful run at The Fez on Lafayette Street and she proudly performs every summer in Coney Island at "Burlesque by the Beach". In May 2001, Dirty Martini appeared at the first new burlesque convention, "Tease-o-rama", in New Orleans, and in June, won the Sally Rand Award for Fan Dance at Dixie Evans' burlesque museum in California as well as first runner-up in 2003. She has performed twice this year with The Velvet Hammer Burlesque at the historic El Ray Theater in Hollywood, CA and returned to the West Coast last September for Tease-o-rama in San Francisco, where she was the only new burlesque performer to receive two standing ovations in one night. Adam sings regularly in New York as a guest of such local legends as Murray Hill and the Pontani Sisters. For Christmas 2002, in collaboration with Deitch Projects, Adam produced and hosted CHAOS & CANDY, a holiday extravaganza complete with a life-size gingerbread village and petting zoo. As creator and star of THE MIKE SHOW, Adam played venues of varying repute in Hollywood, Palm Springs, San Francisco and Manhattan. "Mike" was also co-host of the internet cooking and entertainment show DINNER WITH A DJ, broadcast live from a heavily wired bungalow in the Hollywood Hills rumored to be Charlie Chaplin's old gun shack. These lovely young ladies have released their art form from its former connotation as a high school sport and created a new kind of baton twirling that is sexier, more elegant and more humorous. Twirling to music from surf to swing to punk rock, they appropriate baton into each genre. This "cliché busting" choreography was noted by Bust magazine for its "dazzling" twirling tricks and "Rockettes-style precision." Oh de Twirlette has strutted its stuff at a variety of events, from the Lincoln Center Convergence Parade to the Williamsburg Dog Parade. Most importantly, these ladies look adorable in short shorts.
